LJMU VC PhD Scholarship 2027 — Funded PhD in Liverpool, UK
Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) has opened its Vice-Chancellor (VC) PhD Scholarships 2027, a university-funded PhD competition now in its 12th year. Up to 20 studentships are available for UK and international students across LJMU’s two faculties. A full-time award covers tuition fees, a stipend and a £1,600-a-year bench fee for three years. Unlike most scholarships, you can’t apply on your own: you and an LJMU supervisor write the application together, and the supervisor submits it by 5pm on 29 January 2027. This guide explains how the scheme works, how applications are scored, and who can and can’t apply. That includes an important restriction for Pakistani applicants.

About LJMU and the VC PhD Scholarship
LJMU is a large public university in Liverpool, known for applied and interdisciplinary research in areas ranging from neuroscience and astrophysics to engineering, public health, sport science and criminology. Its Astrophysics Research Institute and its sport and exercise sciences are internationally recognised. The VC PhD Scholarship is LJMU’s flagship internal funding competition, endorsed by the Vice-Chancellor and the University Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee as part of LJMU Strategy 2030.
How it’s different: most UK funded PhDs are either advertised projects (you apply to a ready-made topic) or doctoral training partnerships (DTPs) with fixed cohorts. The VC scheme is a joint student-and-supervisor competition: you shape a project with an LJMU academic, and the pair competes against other pairs. LJMU says the applications are assessed on “criteria of excellence” for both the student and the project, with the student’s record double-weighted.
How it compares: compared with prestige awards like Gates Cambridge, the VC scheme is smaller and less famous, but it’s also less crowded and lets you design your own project, which suits applicants with a clear research idea and a supervisor who backs it.
💰 Funding and Benefits
- ✅ Course fees paid (home or international rate, as applicable)
- ✅ Annual stipend for full-time scholars. LJMU says the rate is set by its Doctoral Academy. Funded UK PhD stipends are usually set at or near the UKRI minimum (verify on official website)
- ✅ Bench fee of £1,600 a year, paid to the lead supervisor for research costs (to be spent each year)
- ✅ 3 years full-time or 6 years part-time (fees only)
- ✅ Up to 3 extra places ring-fenced for UK applicants from under-represented ethnic minority backgrounds (UK residency criteria apply)
Not mentioned on the page: visa fees, the NHS Immigration Health Surcharge, flights and relocation costs. International scholars should budget for these separately (verify on official website).
📋 Eligibility
- UK and non-UK citizens (home and international fee status) who meet the academic requirements for PhD study
- Master’s students must finish their course before enrolling in August/September 2027
- Not eligible: anyone already enrolled on an LJMU PhD or another level-8 programme; professional doctorates aren’t supported
- A named LJMU supervisor is essential. The lead supervisor must be permanent staff at Lecturer level or above
- International applicants must email LJMU International Admissions while preparing the application, to check English language and visa requirements
- Visa brake: LJMU is not currently accepting applications from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, Sudan, Pakistan, Iran and Iraq. Applicants from countries on LJMU’s pre-CAS interview list must complete a pre-CAS interview before a CAS can be issued
🇵🇰 Pakistani students: not eligible at the moment. LJMU’s official page explicitly lists Pakistan among the countries it isn’t accepting applications from. Please don’t spend time on a proposal for this scheme. Use the UK alternatives below instead, and check LJMU’s page again later, because visa-brake lists can change.
🇮🇳🇧🇩🇳🇵🇱🇰 Indian, Bangladeshi, Nepali and Sri Lankan students: these countries aren’t on LJMU’s visa-brake list, so you can apply, subject to LJMU’s English requirements and any pre-CAS interview (verify with International Admissions).
✅ Apply if you…
- Have a strong master’s (or an excellent bachelor’s) and research experience
- Can find an LJMU academic who supports your project idea
- Have publications, a thesis or research outputs (your record counts double)
- Can link your project to LJMU’s Strategy 2030 or faculty research plans
- Are from a country not on LJMU’s visa-brake list
❌ Don’t apply if you…
- Are a citizen of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Myanmar or Cameroon (visa brake)
- Have no LJMU supervisor (applications without one are rejected)
- Are already enrolled on an LJMU PhD or another doctorate
- Want a professional doctorate (DBA, EdD and so on)
- Can’t finish your master’s before September 2027
📊 How Applications Are Assessed
Applications go through a two-stage review: first a faculty panel (led by the Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange), then a university panel chaired by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange, which reviews the top-ranked applications from each faculty. The criteria are:
- The candidate’s calibre (double-weighted): qualifications, research achievements, outputs, experience and skills
- The supervisory team: their experience and ability to guide the project
- Project quality: the clarity of the 250-word lay summary, the research plan and the PhD training plan
- Strategic fit: a clear link to LJMU or faculty research and knowledge exchange priorities
Faculties and schools you can find supervisors in include: the Astrophysics Research Institute, LJMU Maritime Centre, Public Health Institute, Biological and Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Mathematics, Engineering and Built Environment, Nursing and Allied Health, Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, Psychology, Sport and Exercise Sciences, Liverpool Business School, Art and Creative Industries, Education, Humanities and Social Science, and Law and Justice Studies.
📄 What the Application Contains
- Student information and details (on LJMU’s application form template)
- Lay summary: up to 250 words explaining the rationale, aims, objectives and expected outcomes for a non-specialist reader
- Research proposal and training plan
- Statement of link to LJMU Strategy 2030 or the relevant faculty research plan
- Equal Opportunities monitoring form, sent by the student directly to VCScholarships@ljmu.ac.uk
LJMU says no other material should be attached; anything extra is ignored. If the project involves an external organisation, LJMU’s Research and Innovation Services must review it before submission (allow up to 10 working days).
🪜 Step-by-Step: How to Apply
- Check your country isn’t on LJMU’s visa-brake list.
- Find a supervisor: browse LJMU’s faculty and school pages, then email 2–3 permanent academics with your CV and a one-page project idea. Do this by November.
- Agree the project and plan the application together (LJMU recommends writing it jointly).
- Email International Admissions (international applicants) to confirm your English and visa requirements.
- Complete the application form: lay summary, proposal and training plan, and the strategy link.
- Your lead supervisor submits it to VCScholarships@ljmu.ac.uk by 5pm UK time on 29 January 2027.
- Send your Equal Opportunities form yourself to the same email address, with your name at the top, by the same deadline.

🌍 Why Apply (if eligible)
The VC scheme gives you something many funded PhDs don’t: the chance to shape your own project with a supervisor who believes in it, plus a bench fee for research costs. Liverpool is affordable by UK standards, culturally lively, and home to two universities with strong research links. With only 20 awards, competition is real, but a well-matched student, supervisor and project can stand out.
