About Warwick’s PhD Scholarships

Warwick’s Doctoral College runs one university-wide competition for research students starting in October each year. It used to be known as the Chancellor’s International Scholarship, and it has grown into a set of streams with up to 80 awards for 2027. You submit one scholarship application and are automatically considered for every stream you’re eligible for. Applications are judged against competency-based assessment criteria published by the Doctoral College.

How it compares: many UK PhD studentships are funded by UKRI doctoral training partnerships (DTPs) and only pay home fees, which leaves international students with a fee gap of £25,000 or more a year. Warwick’s Chancellors scholarships pay the full international fee, add a £5,000 research grant, and may help with visa costs. That makes them some of the most international-friendly PhD awards in the UK, comparable to Gates Cambridge or Clarendon in coverage, but open across all Warwick departments and with many more awards.

🎯 The Six Scholarship Streams

Stream Places Who Can Apply Extra Step
Faculty Chancellors Up to 30 Any nationality or fee status None
Interdisciplinary Chancellors Up to 12 Any nationality; interdisciplinary project linked to a Warwick Research Spotlight or Research Centre Interdisciplinary statement
AHRC Doctoral Scholarships Up to 3 Any nationality; project within the arts and humanities (AHRC remit) None listed
Doctoral Access: Pathway Up to 3 Any nationality; self-identify as Black or of Black heritage Pathway statement
Doctoral Access: Sanctuary Up to 2 People with UK asylum, refugee or similar status, or CARA-supported (4-year stipend) Home Office status evidence
China Scholarship Council Up to 30 PRC passport holders only (CSC rules) CSC statement

For Pakistani applicants, the relevant streams are Faculty Chancellors, Interdisciplinary Chancellors (if your project crosses disciplines) and AHRC (for arts and humanities). That’s up to 45 places open to you.

💰 What the Scholarship Covers

  • ✅ Full tuition fees at the UK or international rate. International fees for 2027/28 are estimated at about £27,210 (Band 1) or £34,765 (Band 2) a year
  • ✅ Tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate: £21,805 in 2026/27 and an estimated £21,830 in 2027/28, for 3.5 years
  • ✅ £5,000 Research Training and Support Grant for conferences, fieldwork, training and equipment
  • ✅ Possible UK visa and immigration cost support for eligible international scholars
  • ✅ Up to 8 weeks’ annual leave, plus paid family and medical leave
  • ✅ The option to suspend studies, support for disabled researchers, and development opportunities
  • ✅ Part-time study funded at 60% over a proportionally longer period

In PKR: £21,830 a year is roughly PKR 75–80 lakh a year (about PKR 6–6.5 lakh a month, tax-free), and the fee waiver is worth roughly PKR 1 crore or more a year (check current rates). The stipend is enough to live on in Coventry and Warwickshire, which are cheaper than London.

📋 Eligibility

  • Apply for an eligible Warwick research degree (PhD, MPhil/PhD, EngD, or the PhD stage of a Masters+PhD) starting October 2027
  • Any nationality or fee status for the Faculty Chancellors, Interdisciplinary Chancellors and AHRC streams
  • Current Warwick PGR students can’t apply to these streams
  • Meet the academic and English requirements of your chosen PhD course (set by each department; verify on official website)
  • The scholarship can’t be deferred: you must start in October 2027

🇵🇰 Pakistani students: eligible for up to 45 places. Strong profiles usually have a master’s or MPhil with a research thesis, high grades, and some research output (a publication, conference paper or strong dissertation). Some Warwick PhDs accept strong bachelor’s graduates, so check your department. Prepare IELTS or TOEFL scores, because most Warwick PhDs ask for an English test from Pakistani applicants unless you meet a waiver (verify on official website).

✅ Apply if you…

  • Have strong grades and a master’s or MPhil (or an excellent bachelor’s where allowed)
  • Can identify a Warwick supervisor and research fit
  • Can submit your course application well before 7 December
  • Have two academic referees ready to submit by 21 December
  • Want full international fee coverage, a stipend and a research grant

❌ Skip it if you…

  • Are already a Warwick PhD student
  • Need to start before or after October 2027 (awards can’t be deferred)
  • Haven’t started a course application and can’t meet the 7 December date
  • Don’t meet your department’s English or academic entry requirements
  • Only qualify for the CSC stream (PRC passport holders only)

📄 What You’ll Need

  1. A Warwick PhD course application (through Warwick’s postgraduate research application system), with your research proposal and documents as required by your department
  2. Your 7-digit applicant ID, emailed automatically after your course application (allow 48 hours or more)
  3. A registered ITS applicant account
  4. The scholarship application on Warwick’s scholarships portal, answering competency-based questions (watch the word limits)
  5. Stream statements, if relevant, for example the Interdisciplinary Chancellors statement
  6. References, submitted by 21 December 2026

HEC note for Pakistani applicants: upload clear scans of your degrees and transcripts with your university’s grading-scale explanation. Start HEC attestation now, because you’ll need it for the visa (CAS) if you’re selected. Book IELTS UKVI or Academic early, because test dates in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad fill up in November.

🪜 Step-by-Step: How to Apply

  1. Read Warwick’s assessment criteria and applicant guidance (linked from the competitions page).
  2. Find a supervisor: look through your target department’s staff pages and email 2–3 academics with your CV and a short research idea.
  3. Submit your PhD course application by 7 December 2026, 16:59 GMT. Aim for mid-November to leave time for the next steps.
  4. Wait for your 7-digit applicant ID by email (at least 48 hours; the Doctoral College can’t issue IDs).
  5. Register your ITS applicant account.
  6. Complete the scholarship application on Warwick’s portal by 10 December 2026, 16:59 GMT. Allow at least 36 hours to write it.

🌍 Why Apply

Warwick is consistently ranked among the UK’s top universities, with leading departments in economics, mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science, business and the social sciences. A Chancellors award gives you international fees, a living stipend, a research budget and possible visa support. For Pakistani applicants that removes the biggest barrier to a UK PhD: the international fee gap.

Gradualin Editor’s Note: The biggest mistake applicants make here is timing. You can’t open the scholarship form without your applicant ID, and that only arrives after your course application. Aim to submit your course application by about 20 November, write the scholarship answers around the published assessment criteria, and chase your referees before 21 December. Apply to Gates Cambridge and Imperial in parallel. Our deadline calendar has more.
