Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027 — Fully Funded PhD & MPhil
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship pays for everything needed to study a postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge: full tuition, a £23,152 a year living allowance, flights, your visa and the UK Immigration Health Surcharge. About 55 of the roughly 75 scholarships each year go to applicants from outside the US.
The scholarship is open to every nationality except British, so Pakistani and South Asian students can apply for a PhD, MPhil, MLitt, MRes or LLM. Depending on your course, your deadline is either 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027. This guide explains what’s covered, which courses qualify, how the four selection criteria work, and how to write the two short funding answers that carry so much weight.

🎓 About the Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2027
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship was set up in 2000 by a major donation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge. It is one of the world’s most prestigious postgraduate awards, alongside Rhodes and Marshall. Its mission is to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others.
Each year about 75 new scholars are selected. About 20 come from the US round and about 55 from the international round, which covers every other country outside the UK. Scholars join a community of more than 2,000 alumni and take part in a leadership and community programme alongside their degree.
How it compares: Oxford’s Clarendon Scholarship considers every applicant automatically. Gates Cambridge requires you to opt in and submit extra material. Chevening funds one-year master’s degrees across the UK, but its 2027–28 round has already closed. Commonwealth Scholarships are limited to certain countries and courses. Gates Cambridge is the main fully funded route at Cambridge, with a strong emphasis on leadership and social impact as well as grades.
💰 Benefits and Funding
- 🎓 Full University Composition Fee (tuition) at the applicable rate
- 💷 Maintenance allowance: £23,152 a year for a single student (2026–27 rate), pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months
- 📆 PhD: maintenance paid for up to 4 years
- ✈️ One economy airfare at the start and at the end of the course
- 🛂 Inbound visa costs and the UK Immigration Health Surcharge
- 🔬 Discretionary funding for fieldwork, maternity or paternity leave, and hardship
- 🌐 Leadership programme and a global alumni network
What it’s worth: £23,152 is roughly PKR 8.3–8.7 million a year (approximate; check today’s rate), tax-free. Add full international tuition, which for some Cambridge courses is more than £30,000 a year, plus visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs, and a PhD award can be worth well over £200,000 in total.
Note: if you also receive a salary or another substantial scholarship, the Trust may reduce or withhold the standard maintenance allowance.
✅ Eligibility Criteria
- Citizenship: a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom. According to the FAQ, dual UK citizens are also eligible
- Eligible courses: PhD (full-time or part-time), and full-time MPhil, MLitt, MRes and LLM
- Not eligible: MBA, Executive MBA, MFin, PGCert, PGDip, MSt, MASt, PGCE, Doctor of Education, BusD, MD, the Graduate Course in Medicine, and the Master of Conservation of Easel Painting
- Admission: you must apply for, and be admitted to, an eligible Cambridge course
- GPA: no minimum GPA, but academic excellence is one of the four criteria
The four selection criteria:
- Outstanding intellectual ability
- Reasons for your choice of course at Cambridge
- A commitment to improving the lives of others
- Leadership potential
English test: Gates Cambridge doesn’t set its own English test, but you must meet Cambridge’s English requirement for your course, often IELTS 7.5 overall or equivalent, unless you’re exempt (verify on your course page).
Pakistani students: eligible. There are no country restrictions beyond non-UK citizenship.
✅ Strong Candidates
- Graduates with top grades who have a clear academic reason for choosing a specific Cambridge course
- Pakistani researchers and professionals with evidence of social impact: community projects, policy work, NGOs, teaching, health or tech for good
- Applicants who have led something, whether a team, an initiative or a student organisation
- PhD applicants with publications or a strong master’s thesis
❌ Not the Right Fit If
- You are a UK citizen only (no other nationality)
- You want an MBA, MFin or another excluded course
- You have excellent grades but no story of leadership or service
- You can’t meet Cambridge’s English requirement in time
On competitiveness for South Asian applicants: the international round is extremely competitive, because 55 awards are shared across most of the world. Pakistani applicants who succeed usually combine strong academics with specific, measurable impact: not “I want to help my country”, but “I built X, which reached Y people, and this Cambridge course lets me scale it”. The Gates reference should give concrete examples of that impact.
📚 Choosing the Right Cambridge Course
Gates Cambridge funds any eligible Cambridge course, so your course choice comes first. It is also one of the four criteria, so you need to explain why this specific Cambridge course fits your goals.
- One-year MPhil or LLM: taught or research master’s degrees across almost every field, from engineering and computer science to public policy, development studies and law
- MRes: research-training master’s, often leading into a PhD
- PhD: three to four years of research. Contact potential supervisors before applying
Check the Cambridge Course Directory for each course’s funding deadline (8 December or 6 January), its English requirement and its entry requirements. You can read more about the wider application process in our Cambridge postgraduate courses guide.
📄 Required Documents
You apply through the University of Cambridge postgraduate application, not a separate Gates form:
- Cambridge course application, with the documents your department requires (transcripts, CV, statement of interest, research proposal for PhD)
- Two academic references
- A separate Gates Cambridge reference from someone who can judge you against the four criteria. This can be an academic, an employer, or a senior member of an organisation where you volunteered
- Funding section: two questions, each about 200 words (up to 1,400 characters). One is about your academic excellence, and the other asks why this course and how it fits your plans
- English language evidence, if required for your course
Notes for Pakistani applicants: Cambridge normally accepts transcripts and degree certificates in English at the application stage. HEC attestation isn’t usually needed to apply, but keep attested copies ready for after admission. Choose your Gates referee carefully: a well-known name matters less than someone who has seen your leadership and impact first-hand.
🧭 Step-by-Step Application Process
- Choose an eligible Cambridge course and note its funding deadline (8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027).
- PhD applicants: contact a potential supervisor and agree on a research direction.
- Start the Cambridge application, which has been open since 11 September 2026. In the funding section, select Gates Cambridge.
- Write your two 200-word answers. Make every sentence specific: evidence of excellence, and a precise link between the course and your goals.
- Nominate 2 academic referees and 1 Gates referee, and brief your Gates referee on the four criteria.
- Submit by 11:59pm UK time on your course’s deadline.
- Wait for the decision: departments rank applicants (December to February), you hear the outcome by 8 March 2027, final panels sit on 22–23 March, and offers arrive by early April. You have 72 hours to accept.
Practical tip: your department’s ranking is the first and most important filter. A strong admission application (research proposal, statement and academic references) is what gets you nominated to the Gates panel in the first place. Don’t put all your effort into the 200-word answers and neglect the course application.
