Trento M3 Postgraduate Master 2027 — 20 Free-Tuition Grants

Metamaterials are engineered structures with properties that ordinary materials don’t have. They can bend radio waves, block vibrations or absorb sound, and they’re moving fast from the lab into aerospace, 6G antennas, anti-seismic buildings and medical devices. The University of Trento in northern Italy runs a dedicated one-year postgraduate programme in this field: M3, Multifunctional Metamaterials and Metastructures. For the 2027 edition there are 20 grants that each cover the full €3,000 fee. The programme is taught in English and delivered in a blended format, with lectures on-site and online. A 4-year bachelor’s degree is enough to apply, which puts it within reach of Pakistani BS graduates in engineering and physics. Applications close on 27 November 2026 at 12:00 CET. This guide explains what the programme actually is (and isn’t), how you’re scored, and what it will really cost.

About the M3 Programme

M3 is a Master II Livello (second-level postgraduate master), now in its third edition. Its aim is to train professionals in the analysis, design, analytical and computer modelling, simulation and experimental validation of multifunctional metamaterials and metastructures. The programme covers theory, large-scale numerical modelling on high-performance computing (including hybrid approaches that use AI), and hands-on fabrication and testing in labs, across mechanical, electromagnetic, structural, energy, environmental and marine applications.

Important: what a “Master II Livello” is. In Italy, a Master universitario is a one-year postgraduate professional programme (60 ECTS). It is not the same as a two-year MSc (Laurea Magistrale, 120 ECTS). Think of it as an advanced, specialised postgraduate diploma from a respected public university, valuable for jobs and as a stepping stone to a PhD. Don’t expect it to count as a full MSc everywhere: whether it’s accepted as a master’s equivalent depends on the employer or university (verify on official website).

How it compares: fully funded Italian PhDs, like our Trento PhD guide covers, pay a salary-like stipend but are highly competitive and last three years or more. M3 is a one-year, fee-only route into a niche, fast-growing field. With 20 grants available it is far less crowded, and the blended format means you may not need to relocate for the whole year.

💰 Grant Benefits

  • ✅ 20 grants, each covering the full €3,000 tuition fee, so you study free of charge
  • ✅ Blended delivery: lectures on-site and online, live and recorded, with handouts
  • ✅ Labs and an internship: 75 hours of lab courses and a 150-hour internship or stage
  • ✅ 23 specialist courses taught by UniTrento faculty (and guest lecturers)
  • ✅ Industry links: the programme lists Huawei and the Metamorphose VI metamaterials association among its partners
  • ✅ A University of Trento qualification: UniTrento is one of Italy’s top-ranked research universities

What the grant does NOT cover: there’s no stipend, so travel, accommodation, food, the visa and insurance are your own costs. In PKR, the €3,000 fee waived is roughly PKR 9–10 lakh (check the current rate). If you need to live in Trento, budget around €800–1,100 a month for rent and living costs (verify on official website).

📋 Eligibility

  • One of the following: (i) a master’s degree or single-cycle master’s; (ii) a foreign master’s degree recognised as suitable under Italian law; or (iii) a 4-year bachelor’s degree
  • Final-year students can apply if they graduate by the selection date. They’re admitted “conditionally” until they get their degree
  • English: B2 certificate or higher required. The page doesn’t list accepted tests. IELTS 5.5–6.0+ is usually treated as B2, and some Italian universities accept an English-medium instruction letter instead (verify on official website)
  • Relevant background: engineering (mechanical, civil, electrical/electronic, materials, aerospace), physics or applied mathematics fit best. The page doesn’t restrict fields explicitly (verify on official website)

🇵🇰 Pakistani students: eligible. Pakistan’s 4-year BS (16 years of education) matches route (iii), so you don’t need a master’s. A 2-year BA/BSc alone (14 years) will not qualify. Graduates of UET, NUST, GIKI, PIEAS, IST, Air University, COMSATS, NED and similar universities in mechanical, electrical or materials engineering or physics are the natural fit.

✅ Apply if you…

  • Have a 4-year BS or a master’s in engineering, physics or materials
  • Are interested in antennas, RF/EM waves, vibration, acoustics, 3D printing or smart materials
  • Want a one-year European qualification to strengthen a future PhD or R&D application
  • Can cover your own living costs, or want to study largely online
  • Have a B2+ English certificate, or can get one before 27 November

❌ Skip it if you…

  • Need a monthly stipend to survive (this grant covers the fee only)
  • Specifically need a 2-year MSc (Laurea Magistrale) for your plans
  • Only have a 2-year BA/BSc (14 years of education)
  • Have no maths, physics or engineering foundation
  • Can’t put together a CV and motivation letter before the deadline

  2. Motivation letter explaining why you chose the programme. Worth 20 of 100 points
  3. English certificate, B2 level or above
  4. Degree certificate with marks and dates (transcript)

HEC note for Pakistani applicants: upload HEC-attested degrees and transcripts in English. For enrolment, Italian universities may also ask for a Declaration of Value (DoV) from the Italian Embassy in Islamabad, or a CIMEA statement, to confirm your 16-year degree. Start this early, because it can take weeks (verify on official website).

🪜 Step-by-Step: How to Apply

  1. Check your degree: a 4-year BS or a master’s. Final-year students must graduate by the selection date.
  2. Get your English proof: a B2+ certificate (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and so on), or check whether an English-medium instruction letter is accepted.
  3. Build a strong CV. It carries 80% of the score, so highlight your grades, final-year project, labs, software (COMSOL, ANSYS, MATLAB, CST, HFSS), publications and internships.
  4. Write the motivation letter (20%): name 2–3 M3 courses you want, link them to your background, and state a clear career goal.
  5. Apply on the UniTrento portal before 27 November 2026, 12:00 CET.
  6. Selection: the committee scores your CV (up to 80) and letter (up to 20). You may be invited to an interview. You need at least 60 points.
  7. If selected: confirm enrolment and check how the 20 fee grants are assigned (verify on official website). Ask whether you need to be in Trento for the labs and internship, and whether you’ll need a study visa.

🌍 Why Apply

Metamaterials are still a specialist field, so there are few experts and growing demand from telecom (6G and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces), aerospace, defence, civil and biomedical industries. A focused one-year qualification from UniTrento, with labs, an internship and industry partners, can set you apart for R&D jobs and PhD applications in Europe. Free tuition plus the blended format keeps the cost and risk unusually low.

Gradualin Editor’s Note: Be clear about what this is: a free-tuition, one-year specialist postgraduate programme, not a fully funded MSc. If you have an engineering or physics BS and an interest in waves, materials or structures, it’s a smart, low-risk way to build a European profile, especially if you can follow much of it online. Before you commit to moving, email the programme and ask which activities need you in Trento. If you need a stipend, look at our Italy scholarships and DSU-funded Laurea Magistrale options instead.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can Pakistani students apply for the Trento M3 programme?
