About NTU and the NPGS

NTU Singapore is one of Asia’s top research universities, strong in engineering, computer science, materials, business, sciences and education. The NPGS is described by NTU as its premier PhD award from the President, aimed at students with outstanding academic records and research potential.

How the nomination works: you don’t fill in a stand-alone NPGS form. NTU says the scholarship is by nomination only. You apply for a PhD through the graduate admissions portal, top applicants are nominated, and shortlisted candidates are interviewed. So the strength of your PhD application is what puts you in the running (see the NTU page and scholarship FAQs for details).

How it compares: the NPGS stipend for international students (S$4,300 a month) is well above many Asian PhD awards. Compared with Hong Kong’s HKPFS (about HK$28,700 a month, up to 3 years), the NPGS runs for up to 4 years and has its own conference, book and IT allowances. Unlike some government scholarships, it has no bond, so you’re free to work anywhere afterwards.

💰 Scholarship Benefits

  • ✅ Annual tuition fee covered
  • ✅ Monthly stipend: S$4,300 for international students (S$4,800 Singapore PRs, S$5,300 citizens), from January 2026. Roughly PKR 9 lakh a month (check the current rate)
  • ✅ Overseas conference allowance: up to S$5,000 per financial year (April–March)
  • ✅ Book allowance: S$500 a year
  • ✅ IT allowance: S$1,500 once
  • ✅ Thesis allowance: S$600 once, at final-year renewal
  • ✅ Priority for campus accommodation (no separate housing allowance is listed)
  • ✅ No bond after graduation

Note: NTU’s page lists the stipend figures without labels, so we’ve matched them to its citizenship order (verify on official website). NTU can also vary the stipend at any time. Singapore is expensive, especially for private rent, so try to get campus housing. The award is renewed yearly subject to good progress.

📋 Eligibility

  • Open to all nationalities
  • Honours (Highest Distinction) or equivalent at bachelor’s level. Final-year applicants need official university documentation confirming they’re on track
  • Full-time PhD at NTU
  • Test scores (IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT, GATE) as supporting documents where applicable. No minimums are listed on the NPGS page; check your school’s PhD admission page
  • No age limit or GPA figure is given on the page

🇵🇰 Pakistani students: eligible. “Highest Distinction” means the very top of your class. There’s no official Pakistani equivalence on the page, but as a rough guide, think of a CGPA of about 3.8 or higher out of 4.0, ideally with a gold medal or top-of-batch position, plus publications (our estimate; verify with your target school). NUST, LUMS, PIEAS, GIKI, FAST and UET graduates in engineering, computing and sciences are common fits. If you don’t quite reach this bar, NTU has other research scholarships for PhD students, listed on its scholarships page, so applying for the PhD is still worthwhile.

✅ Apply if you…

  • Are a top graduate (gold medal, top of batch or equivalent)
  • Have publications or strong research experience
  • Have a focused research proposal that fits an NTU school
  • Have two strong academic referees
  • Are happy to teach or supervise labs during your PhD

❌ Rethink if you…

  • Have an average degree class and no research output
  • Want a master’s (NPGS is PhD only)
  • Want a part-time PhD
  • Can’t finish your PhD application by 31 December
  • Don’t want any teaching duties

👩‍🏫 Duties and Conditions

  • Graduate Assistantship Programme (GAP): international students must complete teaching or laboratory supervision duties. Singapore citizens and PRs may do so at their school’s discretion. See the GAP document
  • Renewal: the award is given for one year at a time, depending on good progress, up to a maximum of 4 years depending on the school and research funding
  • Terms: recipients must follow the scholarship’s terms and conditions, which may change

📄 Required Documents

  1. Identification documents (passport)
  2. Education qualifications in the original language with official English translations
  3. Research proposal
  4. Two referee reports
  5. Resume
  6. Research publications, where applicable
  7. Test scores, where applicable: IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, GMAT or GATE
  8. Final-year applicants: official university documentation that you’re on track for the highest distinction or equivalent

HEC note for Pakistani applicants: prepare HEC-attested degrees and transcripts with your grading scale. Ask your university for a position certificate or medal letter if you were at the top of your class, since it helps show “Highest Distinction”. Book your IELTS or TOEFL early if your school requires it.

🪜 Step-by-Step: How to Apply

  1. Choose your NTU school and research area, and read its PhD admission requirements.
  2. Identify 1–3 potential supervisors and email them your CV and a short research idea (see our supervisor guide).
  3. Write your research proposal (see our proposal guide).
  4. Ask two referees for reports, and give them the deadline.
  5. Apply through the NTU graduate admissions portal between 1 November and 31 December 2026. NIE applicants use the NIE Graduate Programmes Application Exercise (2 November – 30 December).
  6. Nomination and interview: top applicants are nominated, and shortlisted candidates are interviewed.
  7. If selected: accept the offer, apply for your Singapore Student’s Pass, and start in January or August (semesters begin then; confirm your intake with NTU).

📅 Important Dates

🌍 Why Apply

Few PhD awards combine this level of pay, a world-class research university, an English-speaking city and no bond. Singapore is a gateway for careers in technology, finance, biomedical science and academia across Asia. Conference funding of up to S$5,000 a year helps you build an international research profile while you study.

Gradualin Editor’s Note: Be realistic: the NPGS goes to the very top applicants. But you apply through the normal PhD route, so there’s no downside in trying: if you’re strong but don’t win it, NTU has other research scholarships you may be considered for. Get your proposal and references sorted in November, and don’t leave the portal until the last week of December. Apply to HKPFS (1 December) and OIST too, and check our deadline calendar.
