🎓 Benefits / Funding

One of the most attractive aspects of this program is the comprehensive financial support. Unlike many scholarship programs that offer only a stipend, CiM-IMPRS students receive a formal work contract — meaning they are employed as researchers, not just supported as students.

Here is what you get:

  • 💰 Annual Gross Salary of €37,510 for most positions (biology, biochemistry, physics, mathematics, etc.)
  • 💰 €28,854 gross annually for positions in chemistry/pharmacy departments
  • 🏫 Zero tuition fees — completely free doctoral education
  • 🚇 Free public transport across all of Germany through the semester contribution (approx. €60/month)
  • 🏠 Access to affordable student dormitories through university registration
  • 🔬 Integration into active, funded research groups at a world-class institute
  • 🌍 International academic community with structured training, conferences, and workshops

This is a fully funded PhD position in the truest sense — you are paid to do your research.

🎓 Eligibility Criteria

Before applying, make sure you meet the following requirements:

Academic Qualifications:

  • Must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in life or natural sciences (biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, physics, chemistry, pharmacy, or related fields), mathematics, or computer science
  • Students whose degree has not yet been awarded at the time of application may still apply — but the degree must be completed before October 2026
  • Students with a state examination in pharmacy can only apply to pharmaceutical/chemical projects
  • Medical or veterinary degree holders are NOT eligible

English Language:

  • Native English speakers are automatically eligible
  • Non-native speakers must demonstrate English ability through one of:
    • An internationally recognized test such as TOEFL or IELTS (not mandatory but recommended)
    • Proven higher education completed in English
    • Reasonably long stay in an English-speaking country
    • Demonstrating English ability during the online interview
  • German language is NOT required

APS Certificate (Only for specific countries):

  • Applicants who studied in India, China (PRC), or Vietnam must submit an APS Certificate from the German Embassy in their country before starting their PhD. This should be applied for immediately after selection.

Other Notes:

  • Students currently studying in Münster may apply, but must join a different CiM-IMPRS group than the one they are currently working in
  • The program actively encourages female applicants and candidates with disabilities

🎓 Who Should Apply (and Who Should Not)

✅ You should apply if:

  • You have a Master’s degree (or nearly completed one) in life/natural sciences, math, or computer science
  • You are genuinely interested in one or more of the available research groups and projects
  • You want a paid, structured PhD in Germany with a real work contract
  • You are looking for international exposure and world-class research supervision
  • You want to work in Germany without needing to learn German

❌ You should NOT apply if:

  • You hold a medical or veterinary degree (not eligible)
  • You cannot find a research group/project from the available list that genuinely interests you — the program explicitly discourages applications without a real research interest
  • You are unable to attend the mandatory online interview symposium (June 28 – July 1, 2026)
  • You need a visa or APS certificate and cannot realistically complete that process before October 2026

🎓 Available Research Groups (2026)
