About the Liverpool Graduate Teaching Fellowships

A Graduate Teaching Fellowship combines a funded PhD with structured university teaching. In Year 1, fellows complete a short teacher training programme, mostly through mentored classroom shadowing, which leads to a formal higher-education teaching qualification. Later years focus on the thesis, while fellows continue teaching a fixed number of hours. You finish with a PhD and real teaching experience, which is exactly what academic hiring committees look for.

Not to be confused with LJMU: the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) are different institutions. We covered LJMU’s VC PhD scheme separately; LJMU isn’t currently accepting applicants from Pakistan, but this University of Liverpool GTF has no such restriction listed.

How it compares: unlike UKRI doctoral training partnerships, which often fund home fees only, these GTFs advertise full PhD programme fees for four years, plus a teaching qualification that UK PhDs rarely include. Compared with Warwick’s Chancellors scholarships (3.5 years, research only), the Liverpool GTF lasts longer and builds teaching credentials.

📚 The Three Fields and Priority Research Areas

Field Research Areas Specific Requirements
Management Marketing (2027/28 priorities: sensory and visual marketing; digital and social media communication) · Operations and Supply Chain Management · Strategy, International Business and Entrepreneurship · Work, Organisation and Management (priority: communication in unsettled environments and wicked problems) Master’s in business and management
Economics Microeconomic theory · Applied microeconomics · Macroeconomics · Econometrics and financial econometrics · Political economy · Industrial organisation · Sports economics Master’s in economics or related; quantitative and programming skills
Accounting & Finance Asset pricing and investment · Corporate finance and accounting · International financial markets and the macroeconomy · Financial technology (FinTech) Master’s in accounting and finance or related; quantitative and programming skills

💰 Funding and Benefits

  • ✅ Full coverage of PhD programme fees for four years
  • ✅ Maintenance grant: £21,805 a year (2026/27 guide figure; the 2027/28 rate may change)
  • ✅ £700 a year GTF allowance from Year 2
  • ✅ HE teacher training leading to a formal teaching qualification
  • ✅ Access to the Management School’s Conference Support Scheme
  • ✅ Compatible with external bursaries, but not with North West Social Science DTP or China Scholarship Council awards

In PKR: £21,805 is roughly PKR 75–80 lakh a year (about PKR 6–6.5 lakh a month) (check the current rate). Liverpool is one of the UK’s more affordable student cities. Not mentioned: visa fees, the Immigration Health Surcharge and flights, so budget for these.

📋 Eligibility

  • A UK master’s degree, or international equivalent, in business and management, economics, or accounting and finance (or a related discipline), preferably at merit or above
  • Economics and Accounting & Finance: demonstrable quantitative and programming skills (for example R, Stata, Python or MATLAB)
  • A strong research proposal aligned with one of the research areas
  • International applicants: you’ll need a passport and English language certificates at the formal application stage (the minimum score isn’t stated on the page; verify on official website)

🇵🇰 Pakistani students: eligible. Strong fits include MS or MPhil holders in management sciences, economics, finance or accounting from LUMS, IBA Karachi, PIDE, QAU, NUST Business School, COMSATS, FAST, GCU and Punjab University. A Pakistani CGPA of about 3.3 or higher out of 4.0 is often treated as roughly a UK merit, but Liverpool decides equivalence (verify on official website). Show your econometrics and programming clearly if you’re applying in economics or finance. Fees: the page says “full coverage of PhD programme fees” but doesn’t say “international rate”, so email ulmsphdteam@liverpool.ac.uk to confirm before you invest time.

  • Have an MS or MPhil (merit-level) in business, economics or finance
  • Want an academic career, since teaching experience is built in

❌ Skip it if you…

  • Only have a bachelor’s degree

  • Already hold, or plan to take, a NWSSDTP or CSC studentship (not compatible)
  • Have no research proposal ready
  • Expect visa and health surcharge costs to be covered

📄 Required Documents

Step 1: expression of interest (by 27 November 2026):

  1. Research proposal
  2. Personal statement
  3. Transcript of your highest degree
  4. CV
  5. Optional: suggested supervisors

Step 2: formal application (if shortlisted): transcripts and degree certificates, CV, personal statement, research proposal, two proposed supervisors, two referees, and for international applicants a passport and English language certificates.

HEC note for Pakistani applicants: prepare clear scans of your degrees and transcripts with your university’s grading scale. Start HEC attestation for the visa (CAS) stage, and book IELTS early in case it’s needed at the formal stage.

🪜 Step-by-Step: How to Apply

  4. Complete the expression of interest form with your proposal, personal statement, transcript and CV, by 5pm UK time on 27 November 2026.
  5. If shortlisted: register and submit the formal online application through Liverpool’s portal, quoting ULMS-GTF-2027.
  6. Interview (if invited), then an offer. Start on 1 October 2027.

Important: the university says applicants who skip the expression of interest step “will not be considered for a GTF position.”

🌍 Why Apply

For anyone aiming at an academic career in business, economics or finance, a GTF is a strong launchpad: four years of funding, a Russell Group PhD, a recognised teaching qualification and real classroom experience. That combination puts you ahead of many PhD graduates when applying for lectureships in the UK, Pakistan or the Gulf.

Gradualin Editor’s Note: Treat the expression of interest like the real application: shortlisting depends on it. Build your proposal around one of the listed 2027/28 priorities, and for economics or finance, show your quantitative and coding skills. Email the PGR team this week to confirm international fee coverage. In parallel, apply to Warwick and DIW Berlin (for economists).
