🎓 Eligibility Criteria
Academic Qualifications
The standard minimum eligibility requirement is a 3-year bachelor’s degree plus a 2-year master’s degree, including a written master’s research thesis.
- Candidates with a 1-year master’s degree including a written master’s research thesis may also apply; however, they should expect to pass an entrance exam and/or complete substantial additional coursework at the start of their PhD.
- In very exceptional cases, candidates with only a four-year degree may apply if their degree included an original research thesis and they have substantial research experience.
- Applicants still studying for their degree should anticipate receiving it not later than 6 months after the application deadline.
English Language Requirements
A language test for English is requested for all applicants except those coming from German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and native English speakers from Australia, Canada, Ireland, UK, and USA.
Accepted English proficiency proofs:
- TOEFL: ≥ 95 (internet-based), ≥ 240 (computer-based), or ≥ 587 (paper-based)

What truly sets the DKFZ PhD program apart is its comprehensive support system. Here is what every PhD student receives:
Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) A Thesis Advisory Committee personal to each student provides further support during the whole duration of the PhD. It consists of the supervisor and at least two other senior scientists, one of whom is external to the DKFZ. TAC meetings take place once a year to provide students with feedback on research already conducted and give advice for future projects.
PhD Initial Course Within the first few months, students complete a one-week immersive orientation covering research planning, intercultural communication, design thinking, and scientific networking.
Scientific Skills Training Students access a rich calendar of courses including confocal microscopy, scientific writing, how to present in English, and many more — both internally organized and at external institutions.
PhD Retreat PhD students from different fields meet for three days in a location outside Heidelberg to exchange ideas about recent developments in science. The program includes talks from fellow PhD students and guest speakers, poster sessions, and a team event.
Progress in Cancer Research Lecture Series A weekly lecture series during semester time that keeps PhD students connected to the bigger picture of global cancer research progress.
International Conference Attendance Every PhD student is required to present their work at an international conference — poster or talk — helping them build their global professional network.

🎓 Application Process — Step by Step

The on-site visit takes place at the DKFZ in Heidelberg about 10–12 weeks after the application deadline and lasts 3 days. During the on-site visit, candidates gain deeper insights into the program, participate in social events organized by current PhD students, and connect with the DKFZ academic community.
